As the new school year begins and the Labor Day holiday approaches, STEM realizes that he has no idea what that holiday is all about. Unlike other holidays, his family doesn’t have a big Labor Day get together. His friends at school don’t seem to understand what the holiday is about any better.
So as always, STEM looks forward to talking about it with his family at the dinner table. They have a tradition of sharing their day as they set the table for dinner, so STEM is excited to ask about Labor Day.
But that plan goes out the window when STEM learns that his uncle developed a brand-new video game that “will help people do better in the game of life.” After imagining being able to play his uncle’s new game nonstop – to do better in life – STEM finally gets his questions answered about the history and meaning of Labor Day and its significance for Black people.
This includes a lesson STEM imagined from his grandparents even in their absence, shared by his mother that explains how the Labor Movement inspired the Labor Day holiday in a way that fully aligns with the Seven Principles.
The stories message ultimately encourages us to develop STEM expertise in preparation for existing and future changes in the labor market due to advances in robotics, A.I., and digital currency.
